The Million Metre Challenge
As observed in our ‘Strength for Life’ interview, one of the main reasons why David is “the man to talk to” when it comes to aging and strength for life is the example of this philosophy and ethos put into practice when he undertook a cycle expedition to ride a thousand kilometres around Vietnam, at the age of sixty-two. Of course, though, as he says, its not about being good for your age, its about being good, period.
This journey was completed with the purpose of helping Sportability to raise the seedcorn funding required to develop seven new regional centres of operation to allow the charity to offer their programmes and activities across the country.
For each day of the sixteen day journey, David sent me back his diary reports and some pictures for us to publish on the Sportability website. And some of the imagery from the trip can be seen in our header design for this website, and in our Gallery.
The images and accounts told of journeying in beautiful yet extreme conditions and at one point in temperatures of ninety degrees and humidity of ninety percent. They also give David away as someone who embraces local cultures and seeks to give assistance and share time with people from all walks of life whenever the opportunity arises.
“People say ‘he’s good for his age’. Well no, that’s not good enough. You want to be good, period.” – David Heard
